Looked After Children and Young People (LAC)

Aims / outcomes:

  • Define the legal framework, national and local policies relating to looked after children and their roles and responsibilities in promoting health and wellbeing.
  • Ensure that the delivery of healthcare is child focused, is sensitive to the looked after child or young person’s needs, wishes and feelings and promotes their participation.
  • Examine the role of the health professional in providing advice, support and guidance to carers of looked after children in any setting to enable them to work effectively.
  • Explain the specific health needs and additional vulnerabilities of the looked after child and how they may contribute to improving their health and life outcomes.
  • Describe inequalities in life chances that children who are looked after experience.
  • Recognise the importance of health representation or contribution to the looked after children Statutory Review.
  • Help strengthen multiagency working by health professionals to meet the health needs for looked after children.
